The widespread belief that only dark chocolate is beneficial for health while milk chocolate lacks any valuable properties does not find unequivocal confirmation in science. This was stated by cardiologist Mahboob Alam in an interview with The Times of India.
The specialist referred to the results of a large study involving more than 21,000 people. It was found that those who consumed up to 100 grams of chocolate daily had a notably lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Remarkably, the vast majority of participants preferred milk chocolate rather than dark chocolate.
At the same time, the cardiologist emphasized that these findings should not be interpreted as evidence of any special benefits of milk chocolate. The study merely demonstrates that making categorical conclusions about the harm or benefits of any type of this product is premature. Nevertheless, Alam acknowledged that dark chocolate does indeed contain approximately 70% more flavanols — substances that have a beneficial effect on blood vessels and can lower cholesterol levels.
