Scientists sound the alarm: lack of sleep can lead to Alzheimer's disease, warns general practitioner Yana Kochetkova. The specialist emphasizes that chronic sleep deprivation interferes with the natural processes of brain cleansing and contributes to the accumulation of harmful substances.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," sleep plays a critical role in removing metabolic products from the brain. Throughout the day, our brain works intensively, accumulating metabolic waste. The doctor notes a particular danger: with insufficient sleep, amyloid protein accumulates in the brain, which in the long term can cause the development of Alzheimer's disease.
The problem of sleep deprivation turns out to be complex - it also seriously undermines the immune system. There is a decrease in the production and concentration of key immune cells responsible for fighting infections and tumors. At the same time, the level of cortisol - the stress hormone - increases, which further weakens the immune defense and makes the body more vulnerable to various diseases.
The specialist draws attention to a current problem of modern times: excessive illumination at night disrupts the production of melatonin - the most important regulator of sleep. This leads to an imbalance in biological rhythms, causing chronic fatigue, increased stress, and reduced resistance to normal loads.
For those who want to improve their sleep quality, the doctor gives practical recommendations: maintain regular physical activity, adhere to a healthy diet without overeating in the evenings. It is especially important to create a conducive atmosphere 30-60 minutes before going to bed: dim the lights, minimize noise, and put aside electronic devices, emphasizes Kochetkova.
