The "Doomsday Glacier" has begun to move: scientists raise alarm about global consequences
The gigantic Thwaites Glacier, which has received the ominous nickname "Doomsday Glacier," has begun to actively shift, causing serious concern in the scientific community. Anatoly Tavrichesky, a member of the Russian Geographical Society and oceanologist, spoke about the potential threats of this phenomenon in an interview with aif.ru.
The scientist emphasized that continuous observation is required for the movements of this colossal glacier, which is comparable in area to the territory of Great Britain. It is especially important to inform seafarers about its location in a timely manner to prevent possible maritime disasters.
The expert drew attention to a worrying scenario: if the glacier enters a warm equatorial current, the process of its gradual melting will begin. Tavrichesky particularly noted that this situation poses serious threats to both humanity and the ecosystem of the World Ocean.
"There may also be some organisms in a frozen state, they will gradually thaw, and may spread in the sea," warned the oceanologist.
Western researchers predict that the complete melting of the "Doomsday Glacier" could raise the world ocean level by 60 centimeters. In the most pessimistic scenario, the rise could reach 3-5 meters, which would trigger a chain reaction of melting of other glaciers and lead to a climate catastrophe. However, Tavrichesky assured that such a scenario will not materialize in the near future, but called for vigilance and constant monitoring of the condition and movement of the glacier.
