Scientists have discovered: avocado may be the key to healthy sleep. A large-scale study by American specialists, published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), revealed unexpected benefits of this fruit.

The impressive experiment covered 969 adult volunteers of various ethnic groups with increased waist circumference – a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Researchers divided participants into two groups: the first consumed one avocado daily, the second – only twice a month. Meanwhile, the basic diet remained unchanged throughout the six months.

Throughout the study, scientists carefully monitored physical activity, smoking, sleep, body weight, blood pressure, and metabolic indicators of participants. The results were astonishing: the group that consumed avocado daily demonstrated a significant reduction in total cholesterol and "bad" LDL levels, as well as a notable improvement in sleep quality.

Researchers attribute these beneficial effects to the unique composition of avocado. One serving (approximately one-third of a medium fruit) contains about 13 mg of tryptophan – an amino acid that is a precursor to melatonin, a key hormone regulating sleep. Additionally, avocado is rich in folic acid, which stimulates the production of this important hormone.

A third of the fruit also contains 15 mg of magnesium (about 4% of the daily requirement), necessary for relaxing muscles and the nervous system. Avocado stands out for its high content of soluble fiber, effectively reducing cholesterol levels, and monounsaturated fats – about five grams per serving. The latter actively contribute to lowering LDL and provide protection for the cardiovascular system.
