Knowing multiple languages slows down aging - a sensational discovery by scientists. A study published in the prestigious journal Nature Aging revealed a surprising connection: polyglots maintain clarity of mind and physical activity significantly longer, reports TUT.AZ.
A large-scale study conducted by an international team of scientists covered an impressive sample - 86 thousand residents from 27 European countries in the age range from 51 to 90 years.
The results of cognitive tests are shocking: people who only speak their native language are subject to accelerated aging twice as often compared to those who have mastered several languages.
Specialists emphasize that multilingualism effectively maintains the flexibility of the nervous system, becoming a reliable shield against memory and motor function disorders. This factor in its effectiveness is not inferior to regular physical training and active social life - recognized ways to prolong youth and preserve energy.
Despite the fact that the results can be influenced by other aspects - eating habits, lifestyle, and cultural characteristics - the beneficial effects of knowing several languages remains undisputed even after accounting for all these variables.
"50-75% of the world's population speaks more than one language. However, among English speakers, the majority remain monolingual. Therefore, the results about the protective effect of bilingualism may come as a surprise to such people," emphasized Professor Stephen May from the University of Auckland.
