Beneficial properties of coffee for the digestive system revealed, doctor says

Coffee has a multifaceted effect on the intestines due to its unique composition. This popular beverage can not only combat constipation but also counteract liver fibrosis and restore intestinal microflora.

As reported by TUT.AZ, dietitian and first-category gastroenterologist Nuria Dianova shared interesting facts about coffee's impact on the digestive system with "Gazeta.Ru".

"Caffeine is the key active component of coffee that has a dual effect on the intestines. On one hand, it enhances motility, accelerating the movement of food through the digestive tract. This becomes a real salvation for people suffering from constipation, and for those with lactase deficiency, coffee with milk becomes an effective daily ritual. On the other hand, caffeine stimulates gastric juice secretion, which improves digestion but may cause discomfort in people with increased acidity or gastritis, especially when consumed on an empty stomach," the specialist explained.

Antioxidants in coffee effectively reduce inflammatory processes in the intestines, which is especially valuable for patients with diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis in remission. It's important to note that moderate coffee consumption in compensated liver cirrhosis contributes to the reversal of liver tissue fibrosis.

"Chlorogenic acids contained in coffee also bring significant benefits. First, they slow down glucose absorption in the intestines, which helps control blood sugar levels. Second, studies show their positive effect on the growth of beneficial gut microbiota. Another important component – dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) – stimulates bile secretion, which is critically important for fat digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and also promotes the growth of certain types of bacteria that beneficially affect intestinal health," the doctor concluded.
