Music with a pronounced rhythm helps women run faster and improves mood – new study by Japanese scientists

As reported by TUT.AZ, the results of an interesting study were published in the reputable scientific journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living (FSAL).

In the experiment, 38 students from the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences at Ryutsu Keizai University, aged 18 to 21, performed two ten-minute runs on a treadmill. One run was accompanied by music with a high level of groove, while the second run featured compositions with a low level of rhythmic expressiveness.

"Groove" in musical terminology refers to a special feeling of rhythmic flow that involuntarily causes listeners to want to move, tap their feet, or dance. It's a unique combination of percussion and bass, creating a perfect balance between expected and unexpected rhythmic elements.

After completing each run, participants rated their mood and shared impressions of the music they listened to. The study revealed a curious pattern: female participants under the influence of rhythmic music not only ran noticeably faster but also reported significant improvement in mood, feeling more energized and vigorous. No such changes were observed in men.

Scientists attribute this phenomenon to the fact that women typically show greater sensitivity to musical stimuli. The researchers emphasize the practical value of their discovery: energetic music can become an effective tool for coaches and fitness instructors, helping to increase motivation, improve the well-being of participants, and contribute to the formation of a sustainable habit of regular physical activity.
