The doctor named the pills that are forbidden to split in half

Broke a tablet in half — and harmed yourself: why the common practice of splitting medications can lead to serious consequences

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," splitting tablets is permissible only when they have a special score line or the manufacturer has explicitly indicated this possibility in the instructions. Russian pharmacist Karina Titova warns that in medications without a score line, the active ingredient may be distributed unevenly. This means that by breaking such a tablet, a patient risks receiving too large or, conversely, an insufficient dose of the medication.

Experts emphasize that certain cardiac and antiepileptic medications are particularly sensitive to dosage accuracy. Even a minimal deviation from the required amount of the active ingredient can affect the safety and outcome of the entire therapy.

In addition, specialists remind that opening capsules is strongly discouraged unless explicitly permitted by the instructions. Storing split tablets without consulting a doctor is also inadvisable — after the protective coating is damaged, some medications rapidly deteriorate when exposed to moisture and air, losing their effectiveness.
