Women warned about the dangers of wearing a wet swimsuit

Doctors warn: a wet swimsuit in hot weather can cause serious infections of the urinary system. Cystitis, candidiasis, and bacterial vaginosis lie in wait for those who don't change after swimming, Dr. Luis Tejedor, head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Vitas Madrid Arturo Soria University Hospital, told El Periodico De España (EPE).

The medical expert notes that the summer season with its beaches and swimming pools creates ideal conditions for the development of infectious diseases. The warm and humid environment becomes a catalyst for the reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms. At the top of the list of such diseases is cystitis, an inflammatory process in the bladder that occurs due to an imbalance in the microflora.

"Prolonged wearing of a wet swimsuit is one of the main causes of cystitis. The damp fabric, tightly fitting to the body, creates a real incubator for bacteria, disrupts the natural balance of microflora and causes tissue irritation," warns Dr. Tejedor.

The specialist points out that constant moisture changes the acid-base balance (pH) of the vagina, which significantly weakens the body's protective functions. Women with weakened immune systems, uncontrolled diabetes, and those undergoing antibiotic therapy are at increased risk - for them, the likelihood of developing an infection increases many times over.
