# Scientists: Parasite May Be Able to Extend Human Life

Scientists have discovered an unexpected link between parasites and human lifespan. Researchers' attention was particularly drawn to the roundworm Acanthocheilonema viteae, whose proteins may open the path to active longevity.

As reported by BAKU.WS, this was stated to "Gazeta.Ru" by evolutionary biologist, Professor at City University of Hong Kong, Petr Lidsky.

"Infectious diseases represent one of the most powerful mechanisms of evolution. Genes that interact with viral proteins change three to six times faster than other sections of the genome. Viruses mutate extremely rapidly, forcing our immune system, receptors, and other replication factors to evolve at an incredible speed. It is quite logical that genes selected by evolution to fight infections may also be responsible for other physiological processes, including protection against neurodegeneration," explained the expert.

When asked whether it is possible to extend human life through the influence of pathogens, the specialist answered positively.

"In nature, there exist parasites capable of suppressing inflammatory reactions that are destructive to the bodies of elderly people (such as the roundworm Acanthocheilonema viteae). By reducing the level of inflammation, the parasite can decrease the risk of mortality and increase lifespan. Currently, scientists are thoroughly studying the proteins of this organism to develop a promising pharmaceutical drug," explained the biologist.
