Breakthrough in medicine: Japanese scientists have proven the possibility of oxygen saturation through the intestines, reports TUT.AZ citing Lenta.ru.

A revolutionary study, the results of which are published in the prestigious scientific journal Med, demonstrates the potential of enteral ventilation technology. The method, which involves delivering oxygen-containing fluid through the rectum, could be a real breakthrough for emergency respiratory support in cases of critical lung damage or airway blockage.

During clinical trials, a team from Osaka University recruited 27 healthy volunteers. Participants in the experiment were administered a specially developed perfluorocarbon solution, which has a unique ability to transport oxygen, in volumes ranging from 25 to 1500 milliliters.

The volunteers retained the solution in their intestines for an hour, and importantly — no serious adverse reactions were recorded. The only noted side effect was moderate discomfort when administering maximum doses of the fluid.

Researchers emphasize that if the effectiveness of this method is confirmed in further trials, it could open a new chapter in saving patients with severe respiratory failure, especially when standard ventilation methods do not yield results.
