Mushrooms against aging: nutritionist recommends shiitake, button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms for elderly people

Nutritionist and endocrinologist Ekaterina Shirshova explained in an interview with KP.RU about the unexpected benefits of certain types of mushrooms for older people. According to the specialist, shiitake, button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms can become real allies in the fight against age-related changes.

She emphasized that these mushrooms consist of 90% water and contain easily digestible protein - only two to three grams per 100 grams of fresh product. "This is much easier to digest than our traditional mushrooms - repositories of protein: birch boletes, aspen boletes and porcini mushrooms. These forest dwellers are indeed heavier and contain dense fiber and fat-soluble substances that can excessively burden the digestion of an elderly person," explained Shirshova.

What makes mushrooms especially valuable is their high content of ergothioneine - a powerful antioxidant that actively protects cells from lipid peroxidation, which causes the so-called "smell of aging." Ergothioneine also has beneficial effects on skin condition, and spermidine, another valuable substance in mushrooms, enhances the ability of cells to process damaged components, maintain organ functions, and slow down age-related changes.
