The World Ocean is breaking temperature records: in 2023, an unprecedentedly long period of high water surface temperatures was recorded. This is reported by Science Daily, citing a study by Chinese scientists led by Tianyun Dong.
According to the analysis, abnormal heat covered an impressive 96% of the World Ocean's surface. These indicators became the most extensive over the entire 40-year observation period.
"The indicators of 2023 may mark a fundamental shift in ocean and atmospheric dynamics, potentially serving as an early warning of an approaching tipping point in Earth's climate system", – the material states.
It is noted that the heat hit the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean the hardest, as well as the north, southwest, and tropical parts of the eastern Pacific Ocean.
