39-year-old San Diego resident lost her limbs due to complications from flu and streptococcal infection
Arisbet Munoz from San Diego (USA) went to the hospital with common symptoms - nausea and body aches, but the consequences turned out to be catastrophic. According to the Daily Mail, the 39-year-old woman was diagnosed with two common infections that led to dramatic consequences.
Medical tests showed the presence of influenza and group A streptococcus - bacteria that typically cause such common diseases as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute respiratory infections, and otitis. However, in Munoz's case, the situation took a threatening turn - sepsis developed during treatment. According to the publication, the woman's body demonstrated an excessive immune response, in which the immune system began attacking its own healthy cells. One of the most severe complications was necrotizing fasciitis - an aggressive soft tissue infection causing necrosis of the muscle fascia and subcutaneous tissues, also known as the "flesh-eating disease".
As a result of the disease progression, doctors had to take radical measures. The patient's right leg was amputated below the knee, the left leg above the knee. Her right arm and left hand were also amputated. To prevent lung failure and cardiac arrest, Munoz was connected to a ventilator.
The woman's treatment continued for five months, and only in April 2025 was she discharged from the hospital. Now Arisbet can breathe and eat independently, which is significant progress after the ordeals she endured.
