European Commission presented an ambitious plan to abandon Russian energy resources
On Tuesday in Strasbourg, the European Commission unveiled a long-awaited draft "roadmap" aimed at completely ending the EU's dependence on Russian energy sources. The important strategic step was announced by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen at a specially organized press conference.
"Today we approved the roadmap, and next month we will present the commission's legislative proposals," Jørgensen told journalists.
According to the published materials, the strategic document provides for "the gradual removal of Russian oil, gas and nuclear energy from EU markets, which will take place in a coordinated and safe manner as our energy transition progresses."
"The measures were designed to maintain the security of energy supplies in the EU, while limiting any impact on prices and markets," the document emphasizes.
According to expert forecasts, by 2030 the European Union will be able to replace up to 100 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas, which implies a reduction in demand by 40-50 billion cubic meters by 2027. In parallel, a fivefold increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity is expected - to approximately 200 billion cubic meters by 2028, which significantly exceeds the current volumes of Russian gas imports to the EU.
