Cardiologist warned: ice cream in hot weather can trigger a heart attack
"A heart attack can quite possibly occur under the influence of cold - after ice cream, cold soda, sudden temperature changes, for example, after a contrast shower or jumping into icy water," cardiologist Irina Tarasova told "Gazeta.Ru" in an interview.
The specialist explained that sudden exposure to cold can cause coronary vessel spasm. A healthy body will cope with such stress, however, if there are atherosclerotic changes in the vessels, spasm may develop and, as a result, myocardial ischemia.
"This phenomenon is called 'vasospastic angina.' Spasms can be triggered not only by cold, but also by smoking, energy drinks, stress. Due to hormonal fluctuations and adrenaline release, vasospastic angina attacks often occur in the early morning hours," the cardiologist emphasized.
According to the doctor, men over 40, women during menopause, people with hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, excess body weight, and smokers are at particular risk. Also in the risk group are those who have already experienced chest pain or shortness of breath, as well as those with a family history of heart attacks or strokes.
"It is precisely because of the spasm of arteries supplying blood to the heart that ice cream can become a 'trigger' for a heart attack. It does not cause a heart attack, but sometimes it can show that something is wrong with the heart and a thorough examination is necessary," the specialist explained.
In conclusion, Tarasova urged regular preventive check-ups with a cardiologist, even in the absence of complaints. And if alarming symptoms appear - to see a doctor immediately.
