Scientists have proven: almonds can become a salvation for metabolic syndrome. Research conducted by specialists from the Linus Pauling Institute and the College of Health at Oregon State University showed: regular consumption of almonds can reduce risks associated with metabolic syndrome. The work was published in the journal Nutrition Research.
The large-scale study involved adults suffering from metabolic syndrome - a dangerous condition characterized by abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, low "good" cholesterol, and high triglyceride levels. Volunteers were divided into two groups: the first consumed a 320-calorie portion of almonds daily (approximately 45 nuts) for 12 weeks, while the second consumed an equivalent amount of calories in the form of crackers.
The results were impressive: after just four weeks, participants in the "almond" group showed significantly increased levels of vitamin E - a powerful antioxidant found in these nuts. Additionally, researchers recorded a decrease in total and "bad" cholesterol, a noticeable reduction in waist circumference, and substantial improvement in gut health.
Scientists particularly emphasize that vitamin E is one of the most deficient components in the American diet, and almonds can be an excellent source of it. Specialists strongly recommend including these nuts in the daily menu in the absence of contraindications - especially for people with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
