Russian doctors urge elderly people to give up running in favor of safer physical activities

As reported by TUT.AZ, Tatiana Galeeva, head of the first therapeutic department of the Moscow clinic "Be Healthy," issued important recommendations for citizens over 60 years of age regarding physical activity.

"By the age of 60, patients may develop various cardiovascular diseases, which during running can lead to serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, hypertensive crisis, rhythm disturbances, thrombosis of various localizations. Also, we cannot ignore the development of bone system damage by diseases such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. In the first case, running can lead to an exacerbation of the disease. The second case is dangerous in terms of pathological bone fractures and vertebral fractures," emphasized Galeeva.

According to the medical expert, uncompensated hormonal disorders of the thyroid gland are also a contraindication to running.

"In this case, we are talking more about increased thyroid function with excess hormones that make patients active. And as a result, one can get serious complications in the form of heart rhythm disorders with all the ensuing consequences," the doctor explained.

The specialist noted that people who have been actively involved in sports for many years can continue running training, but taking into account their physical capabilities.

"But starting to run at an elderly age is only possible in a gentle mode after a thorough examination by a therapist and cardiologist. It's even better to replace running with alternatives: walking, especially Nordic walking, swimming, or cycling," concluded Galeeva.
