Geologists have uncovered the mystery of an unknown seismic zone off the coast of Northern California. Scientists have determined that the discovered area is located at the junction of the famous San Andreas Fault and the Cascadia subduction zone, making it a potential source of catastrophic earthquakes.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to sciencedaily.com, specialists from the US Geological Survey, in collaboration with university researchers, have made a sensational discovery. In the area of the known "triple junction" of tectonic plates, they found two additional hidden mobile structures. This discovery sheds light on the mysteries of past seismic events, including the unusually shallow 7.2 magnitude earthquake of 1992.
Lead researcher David Shelly emphasized that the actual boundary of the tectonic plates runs in a completely different location than previously assumed. The obtained results significantly change the map of seismic threats for this region, which is already considered one of the most earthquake-prone areas on the planet.
