Revolutionary gene analysis method may overturn understanding of brain function - study by California scientists
Neurobiologist Dr. Michael Altem from the University of California has presented a breakthrough gene analysis method that could fundamentally change our understanding of how the brain works. His research in the field of gene coexpression has revealed how different groups of genes interact in the brain, which plays an important role in studying numerous neurological diseases, including brain tumors. The work was published in the journal Brain Medicine.
Gene coexpression is a process in which multiple genes are activated simultaneously or at similar points in time. This may indicate that these genes perform interrelated functions in a cell or tissue.
The method developed by Altem and his team is called WGCNA (Weighted Gene Coexpression Network Analysis). This approach allows not just analyzing the activity of individual genes, but identifying stable patterns of their interaction in various cell types. This discovery significantly improves understanding of how brain cells work collectively and could become the foundation for developing new biomarkers and treatment methods for malignant brain tumors.
Altem's research has also shown that gene coexpression may be key to finding molecular markers that will help not only diagnose brain diseases but also develop more precise and individualized treatment methods.
According to the scientist, the results of the work open new horizons in neurobiology and medical research, providing opportunities for a deeper understanding of the brain and creating effective methods for treating its pathologies.
