Powerful earthquake shook the Tokara Islands in southwestern Japan
Seismologists recorded an underground tremor with a magnitude of 5.3 near the Tokara Islands, located in the southwestern part of Japan. This information was distributed by the country's national meteorological agency.
Fortunately, there was no threat of a tsunami after the earthquake. There were also no reports of casualties.
Notably, the Tokara archipelago has been experiencing a real seismic storm over the past week and a half. During this short period, over 1,180 underground tremors with a magnitude above 1 have been registered here, including several powerful earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 5 to 5.5.
Japanese seismologists explain such activity by the location of the islands on the boundary of lithospheric plates, which makes the region particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. Experts predict the continuation of underground tremors in the near future and strongly recommend residents to remain vigilant. There are several small settlements on the Tokara Islands with a total population of about 650 people.
