Medical mystery: Brazilian woman needed 56 years to learn her diagnosis
For more than half a century, doctors could not solve the mystery of Maria Lucia de Almeida Gomes' illness from Brazil. Her unusual story was published by Metropoles.
Maria's health began to deteriorate when she was only two years old. Over time, the situation became more serious: her legs became curved, her teeth fell out earlier than expected, she developed excruciating pain in her feet and jaw problems. Despite 12 surgeries and constant use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, relief did not come.
Only when the Brazilian woman turned 58, doctors were finally able to make an accurate diagnosis - X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets.
Surprisingly, after decades of unsuccessful treatment, doctors prescribed Gomes just one medication that radically changed her quality of life. It is noted that the woman absolutely cannot interrupt taking the medicine, as all symptoms quickly return.
