Scandinavian (Nordic) diet can simultaneously improve blood sugar control and reduce fat deposits in the liver. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Uppsala University, who published their research results in the journal Nature Communications.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Nature Communications, the study involved 150 people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. Volunteers were divided into three groups, each following a separate diet regimen. The most pronounced effect was demonstrated by the Nordic diet, based on whole grains, vegetables, berries, fish, and rapeseed oil with minimal saturated fat content.
Over the course of a year, participants in this group saw liver fat content decrease by more than 20%, and blood glucose indicators improved significantly. More than half of the volunteers completely lost signs of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Scientists note that the observed effect cannot be explained by weight loss alone. Analysis showed that almost half of the positive changes are related specifically to the quality of the diet, not to weight loss.
The authors also emphasized that the diet proved relatively easy to follow: participants did not restrict caloric intake, yet they still lost weight and showed improvement in metabolic indicators.
