Evening pistachios can become a salvation for the intestines in case of carbohydrate metabolism disorders. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Pennsylvania State University, who published their research in the authoritative journal Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN).
51 adults with prediabetes participated in the large-scale experiment. The study was conducted in two phases of 12 weeks each. Participants alternately included either a regular carbohydrate snack (15-30 grams) or 57 grams of pistachios in their evening diet. After completing each period, volunteers provided samples for detailed analysis of the gut microbiome.
The results were impressive: regular consumption of pistachios significantly transformed the composition of the intestinal microflora. Nut snack lovers experienced a significant increase in beneficial bacteria, including Roseburia and members of the Lachnospiraceae family.
Researchers note that these microorganisms produce a special short-chain fatty acid — butyrate. This substance serves as a key energy source for colon cells, strengthens the intestinal barrier, and effectively fights inflammatory processes.
At the same time, there was a noticeable decrease in bacteria associated with negative metabolic effects. In particular, after the pistachio course, the population of Blautia hydrogenotrophica — a microorganism that produces compounds potentially dangerous for the cardiovascular system and kidneys — was significantly reduced.
The authors of the study believe that the identified changes in the body with regular consumption of pistachios can significantly slow down the development of type 2 diabetes and reduce the level of chronic inflammation. To confirm this promising hypothesis, the scientific team plans to continue research in this direction.
