Gut bacteria can cause OCD: sensational discovery by Chinese scientists has revolutionized our understanding of mental disorders
A revolutionary study by Chinese scientists, published in the prestigious Journal of Affective Disorders, challenges traditional views on the nature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While the medical community previously considered OCD exclusively as a "brain disease," there is now compelling evidence linking this condition to gut microflora. Using advanced genetic methods, researchers identified six specific types of bacteria that are directly involved in the development of this severe disorder.
This scientific work became the first serious confirmation of a causal relationship between gut bacteria and mental disorders. Although scientists had previously discovered correlations between microbiota and conditions such as depression and anxiety, the connection with OCD had until now remained only in the realm of theoretical assumptions.
The scientific team has high hopes for the practical application of their discovery. In the future, this could lead to the development of fundamentally new methods for preventing and treating OCD through correction of gut microflora. The significance of this breakthrough is difficult to overestimate, considering that about 40 percent of patients with OCD show low effectiveness with existing therapeutic approaches. For this large group of people, the new treatment strategy could become a long-awaited chance for a qualitative improvement in life.
