British scientists have revealed the secret of preserving muscle strength on a high-fat diet. Researchers from Coventry University discovered that the natural antioxidant resveratrol helps maintain muscle function even when consuming foods high in fat. The research results were published in the authoritative scientific journal The Journal of Physiology.

Resveratrol, which is found in significant quantities in red grapes, peanuts, and several other products, has long attracted scientists' attention for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, the new study has demonstrated for the first time its ability to protect muscle tissue from metabolic stress caused by improper nutrition.

During the experiment, which lasted 12 weeks, British specialists fed laboratory mice a high-fat diet. One group of animals additionally received resveratrol. The results were impressive: mice taking the antioxidant maintained significantly higher muscle function compared to the control group. The most notable protective effect was observed in fast-twitch muscle fibers, which usually suffer the most from the effects of fatty foods.

Scientists emphasize the special significance of their discovery in the context of the global obesity epidemic: according to the World Health Organization, about a billion people on the planet suffer from this condition. In the near future, researchers plan to move to clinical trials involving humans to evaluate the effectiveness of resveratrol in preventing muscle weakness and other negative consequences of obesity.
