Caring for houseplants can be an effective way to reduce anxiety and restore emotional well-being, but experts emphasize that this method works best as a supplement to professional help.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to "Gazeta.Ru," medical psychologist at the Center for Mental Health Sofia Pavlova stated that plant care can support psycho-emotional balance — especially for those living under chronic stress or struggling with anxiety disorders.
According to the Russian expert, self-regulation practices — whether art therapy or interaction with nature — can serve as an effective supplementary tool. Nevertheless, in cases of clinical depression, individually tailored therapy and systematic work with a specialist take priority.
Pavlova explains that observing plant growth helps restore interest in life during mild apathy and provides a sense of productivity. In addition, caring for flowers facilitates a kind of "reset" after a stressful day — which is especially valuable for people with high mental workloads and active social interaction.
At the same time, the expert warns that this method is far from suitable for everyone. Patients with severe depression may simply lack the resources even for basic daily tasks, while perfectionists' excessive control over plants may only intensify feelings of guilt.
The specialist recommends choosing low-maintenance plants that do not require complex care, spending 15–20 minutes a day or several times a week on them, and not treating failures as a problem. According to her, a plant's death is not a reason for self-criticism.
Experts emphasize that if anxiety, apathy, or a depressed state begins to interfere with daily life, it is important not to delay seeking professional help.
