Dangerous trend: "Tan activator" with melanotan-2 may trigger cancer development
The increasingly popular "tan activator" containing melanotan-2 poses a serious health threat. Cosmetologist Victoria Zhukova told "Gazeta.Ru" about this, warning of the risks of using this unregistered preparation.
"Currently, a 'tan activator' with the active ingredient melanotan-2 is actively gaining popularity, which is not registered in our country as a medical product. It's a spray used on the nasal mucosa in hopes of getting the perfect color. But instead, it causes stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, abundant appearance of moles, and risk of cancer development," the doctor stated.
The cosmetologist emphasized that this product can negatively affect the central nervous system. Zhukova insists that all photosensitizing products should be prescribed exclusively by a qualified doctor.
The expert explained that any tan is accompanied by micro-damage to DNA in cells. Over time, this damage accumulates, leading to premature aging, reduced skin elasticity, appearance of wrinkles and pigment spots. The most alarming consequence is an increased risk of developing melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.
"Many think that gradual or 'safe' tanning is not harmful, but any change in shade is already damage. Even if the skin doesn't burn, ultraviolet still affects deeply at the cellular level," the doctor explained.
Zhukova claims that the most beneficial strategy for skin is year-round protection.
"In summer and when staying in hot countries, you should avoid the sun during its peak activity hours - usually from 11 AM to 4 PM. During this time, the risk of burns and skin damage is especially high. It's necessary to drink sufficient water and use modern products with antioxidant protection and SPF, which contain not only filters but also ingredients for skin restoration and hydration," the cosmetologist said.
The doctor recommends applying products with SPF of at least 30(50+++) 15-20 minutes before going outside and reapplying every 2 hours, especially after swimming or intense sweating. Zhukova notes that sunscreen is necessary not only for fair skin but also for olive and dark skin.
The cosmetologist also emphasized the importance of using SPF even in cloudy weather, as up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through clouds and affect the skin everywhere - in the city, at the dacha, and even while driving a car.
Additionally, Zhukova dispelled the common misconception that SPF completely blocks tanning. According to her, skin color still changes, but the skin darkens gradually and more safely - without burns and cell stress.
The doctor also refuted the myth that avoiding tanning prevents vitamin D production.
"A short stay in the sun (10-20 minutes) is enough to get the daily requirement of vitamin D. And prolonged exposure without SPF is harmful, not beneficial," Zhukova concluded.
