Fish on the table every day: health benefits and important warnings

As reported by TUT.AZ, medical experts shared valuable recommendations with Delish publication about including fish in the daily diet.

Nutritional consultant Rosemary Trout and physician Raj Dasgupta emphasize the exceptional value of fish as a source of complete protein containing the full complex of essential amino acids. Salmon and tuna are recognized as true champions in terms of beneficial nutrient content – they are rich in fatty acids that have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, and also contain essential microelements – iodine and choline.

"People who regularly consume fish demonstrate a significantly lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and also note improved mental health," emphasizes Dr. Dasgupta.

However, experts warn: despite the obvious benefits, diversity in nutrition remains a key principle. Although daily fish consumption is safe for most people, overindulgence in the same species can lead to the accumulation of dangerous substances in the body, primarily mercury.

"Methylmercury poses a serious threat to the central nervous system and is especially dangerous for the developing brain," warns Trout. "Pregnant and nursing women are strongly advised to exclude fish with high mercury content from their diet: tuna, shark, and swordfish."

Experts consider these fish species safe:

salmon

shrimp

black sea bass

cod

tilapia

sardines

scallops

lobster

As for the eternal question about choosing between wild and farmed fish, specialists reassure – both options are suitable. The main rule is to purchase products from trusted suppliers and carefully monitor storage conditions: fish should be properly chilled or frozen.
