American scientists: one day of proper nutrition can dramatically improve your sleep

In a new study, American specialists made an amazing discovery: just one day of balanced nutrition is enough to significantly improve the quality of night rest. According to the data obtained, consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day helps to fall asleep faster and reduce the number of nighttime awakenings.

Researchers recruited 34 healthy volunteers with an average age of 28 years for the experiment. Participants kept a food diary in a special application, and their sleep was monitored using modern trackers. Scientists carefully analyzed sleep fragmentation — how often subjects woke up at night and how transitions between different sleep phases occurred.

The results were impressive: those who consumed at least five servings of plant-based food daily saw their sleep quality improve by a whole 16%. Whole grain products also had a positive effect on night rest. Red and processed meat, on the contrary, negatively affected sleep quality.

The scientific explanation for this phenomenon is related to the effect of plant fiber on gut microflora. Beneficial bacteria that feed on plant fibers stimulate the production of serotonin and melatonin — key hormones responsible for sleep regulation.

"It's surprising that such significant changes were observed in less than 24 hours," noted Dr. Esra Tasali, an expert in sleep medicine from the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.
