Ancient fortress over 2000 years old discovered in Egypt

In the Sinai Desert, archaeologists have excavated an ancient military fortress from the Ptolemaic era

On the eastern border of Ancient Egypt, in the Tell Abu Saifi area, scientists have discovered impressive remains of an ancient military fortress. Extensive excavations have revealed an entire complex of defensive structures that had strategic importance for the protection of the state.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the discovered fortress served not only military but also industrial functions. Archaeologists have unearthed powerful fortifications, quarters for soldiers, fragments of shipyards, and a defensive moat more than two meters deep. Of particular interest is a well-preserved section of a paved Roman road over 800 meters long, connecting the eastern gate with the central part of the fortress.

Among the significant findings are four large kilns for lime burning, which indicates developed construction production and active military activities in the fortress territory.

Specialists emphasize that Tell Abu Saifi maintained its strategic importance for many centuries — from the reign of Ptolemy I (305 BCE) to the period of the Arab conquest of Egypt. According to statements from Egyptian authorities, there is a possibility that troops under the command of Alexander the Great were stationed at this location.

This archaeological discovery significantly expands scientists' understanding of Ancient Egypt's defense system and confirms the exceptional importance of the eastern borders for the security of the ancient state.
