SECRETS OF HOTEL CLEANLINESS: WHAT HIDES BEHIND THE PERFECT FACADE OF HOTELS
Snow-white sheets, sparkling bathrooms, and a pleasant aroma in the air – this is how most of us imagine the perfect hotel room. However, behind this picture of impeccable cleanliness may lurk a completely different reality, one that is rarely spoken about openly.
An investigation has shown that sanitary standards in many hotels, especially in the mid-range and budget segments, are not observed as strictly as guests would like. Staff often work under severe time constraints and cost-cutting measures. As a result, instead of proper disinfection of surfaces, maids often limit themselves to a quick wipe of the entire room with the same cloth.
The real breeding grounds for microbes turn out to be the items that are touched most frequently: remote controls, light switches, telephones, and door handles. Shocking fact: these surfaces are almost never treated with antiseptics. Bed linens in many hotels are not changed after each guest, but only upon special request or when they show obvious signs of use.
Another unpleasant discovery: used towels are sometimes simply folded and put back in place. And glasses in bathrooms may be hastily rinsed and wiped with the same towel used to clean other surfaces.
Experts note that the problem lies not in the dishonesty of the staff, but in systemic deficiencies in labor organization. One maid is forced to service up to two dozen rooms per shift, having only 10-15 minutes for each.
Of particular concern is the condition of mattresses and pillows, which in some hotels are not replaced for years, turning into real incubators for bacteria, dust mites, and allergens.
Notably, even five-star status is not a guarantee of impeccable hygiene. Elite establishments also experience lapses, especially with high staff turnover and a formal approach to quality control.
Experienced travelers recommend always carrying antiseptic products, refusing to use hotel dishes, and carefully checking bed linens. Some even prefer to bring their own towels and pillowcases.
Absolute sterility does not exist even in the most luxurious hotels in the world. However, awareness of potential problems will help guests take necessary precautions and make their stay as comfortable and safe as possible.
