Powerful magnetic storm hit Earth: RAS scientist told about timing and consequences
On the night of May 29, our planet was hit by a powerful magnetic disturbance, close to class G3. As Nathan Eismont, a leading researcher at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TUT.AZ, this natural phenomenon will last no more than a day.
Specialists note that according to the international classification, magnetic storms are ranked from G1 (weak) to G5 (extremely strong). The current disturbance is categorized as above average and can significantly affect the operation of satellite systems, including GPS, temporarily reducing the accuracy of navigation devices.
As Eismont explained, the duration of a magnetic storm is directly related to the characteristics of the plasma clump ejected by the Sun. Such a clump can either pass by Earth or impact our planet.
"In case it hits, these storms occur. Judging by the time the storm continues, it is above average in power," the scientist emphasized.
According to the expert's forecast, the magnetic disturbance will end in about a day. Eismont assured that no serious consequences are expected from this storm.
