A devastating earthquake of magnitude 6 occurred in the eastern Afghan province of Kunar, claiming the lives of more than 250 people. This was reported to "Anadolu" by a representative of the Ministry of Information of Afghanistan.
According to him, the districts of Kunar province were most affected, roads are blocked due to landslides, and search and rescue operations are being conducted with the help of helicopters. Among the injured are more than 500 people, and it is expected that the death toll may rise.
The spokesman for Afghanistan's interim government, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed on the American company X's social network that the earthquake had caused human casualties. "Unfortunately, today's earthquake has caused loss of life and property damage in the eastern provinces," he said.
He noted that local authorities and residents are participating in rescue operations, and teams from the central government and neighboring provinces are heading to the disaster zone.
Local officials note that this is one of the strongest earthquakes ever to occur in the country. In addition, at least two aftershocks have been recorded in the region, one of which had a magnitude of 5.2.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad at a depth of 8 kilometers, near the border with Pakistan.
