Iran closes government institutions due to abnormal heat and energy crisis

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Iranian media, the Ministry of Energy of Iran has come up with an unprecedented initiative to reduce energy consumption. In at least 15 of the country's 31 provinces, government institutions will be completely closed or switched to reduced working hours.

According to Tehran Governor Mohammad Sadek Motamedian, the measures taken are vital to control the critical situation with energy supply, especially in the areas of water and electricity supply. At the same time, he emphasized that all emergency and urgent services will continue to function as usual.

Since mid-July, Iran has been in the grip of extreme heat, which has led to a colossal overload of the energy system. Rolling blackouts have already begun in many parts of the country. In the south of the country, thermometers have exceeded the critical mark of 50°C.

Among the most affected regions are West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Hormozgan, Alborz, and the capital Tehran. The capital's administration was also forced to reduce pressure in the water supply system due to a dramatic drop in water levels in reservoirs. According to media reports, Iran is experiencing the worst drought in the last century.
