Drama in the Seoul metro: pensioner sets fire due to divorce, dozens injured
A high-profile case is currently being considered in South Korea's judicial system, where a 67-year-old man has appeared before justice for setting fire to a subway car in Seoul. As Chosunbiz reports, the tragic incident was caused by the elderly person's personal drama.
The shocking incident occurred on May 31 on the fifth line of the capital's metro. The pensioner with the surname Won, while in a moving train inside a tunnel, poured gasoline in the car and set it on fire. As a result of this dangerous act, 22 passengers were hospitalized with poisoning from combustion products, and another 128 people received medical assistance at the scene. The material damage caused to the Seoul metro is estimated at 330 million won (about 19 million rubles).
During questioning, the suspect did not hide the motives for his actions. Won admitted that he decided to commit this socially dangerous crime due to dissatisfaction with the outcome of divorce proceedings with his wife. He is now facing serious charges of deliberate arson and attempted murder of passengers.
