Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko made an alarming statement: excess weight dramatically reduces the lifespan of Russians. Speaking at the SPIEF session "Food Security of Russia: Challenges and Strategies," the head of the Ministry of Health presented shocking statistics: people with a body mass index from 30 to 35 lose 2-4 years of life, and with an index above 40 - a whole decade, reports RIA Novosti.
Murashko did not hide his concern about these data. He emphasized that excess weight becomes a catalyst for dangerous cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease and hypertension.
The Minister also noted the economic consequences of the problem for healthcare. "We are observing an overexpenditure of resources on treating diseases that in some cases could have been avoided or delayed," Murashko emphasized, pointing to the need for preventive measures.
