Japanese city of Toyoake announces "digital diet": authorities propose limiting smartphone time to two hours per day

The administration of the Japanese city of Toyoake has introduced an unusual initiative to combat digital addiction, reports UPI. A draft ordinance has been submitted to the city council calling on residents to voluntarily reduce the time spent on smartphones, tablets and computers outside of work and study to a maximum of two hours per day.

Mayor Masafumi Koki explained that the document also includes special recommendations for the younger generation: elementary school students are advised to put away their gadgets by 9:00 PM, and high school students by 10:00 PM.

The administration particularly emphasizes that the ordinance is purely advisory in nature - no fines or other penalties are provided for exceeding the "digital limit."

"The two-hour limit on smartphone use is just advice. The main goal of the initiative is to draw attention to the problem and help prevent negative consequences of excessive gadget use on the health and daily lives of citizens," the mayor emphasized.
