Friedrich Merz officially took office as the 10th Chancellor of Germany, taking a solemn oath in the Bundestag
The Phoenix TV channel broadcast the historic event live.
"I swear to devote my strength to the welfare of the German people, to increase its prosperity, to protect it from harm, to uphold and defend the Basic Law and the laws of the Federation, to conscientiously fulfill my duties and to do justice to everyone. So help me God," said Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Merz, placing his hand on the constitution.
According to information released by the DPA agency, the newly elected head of government will hold the first meeting of his cabinet on May 6.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bundestag deputies elected Merz as Federal Chancellor in the second round of voting. After that, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier ceremonially presented him and the members of his Cabinet with official appointment certificates.
