The European Union is preparing a powerful trade response: tariffs on American goods could reach 90 billion euros if Trump implements his threats. Cars, spare parts and aircraft from the US will be hit with customs duties of up to 30%, reports TUT.AZ citing Bild's Telegram channel.
In mid-July, Trump made a loud statement about his intention to impose a 30% tariff on almost all European goods starting August 1, and for steel and aluminum this figure could reach even 50%.
The EU has not stood aside and has developed a strategy for retaliatory actions in case negotiations, which are now being conducted urgently, fail. European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič is in active dialogue with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Brussels considers August 1 as a critical date for reaching an agreement.
According to Bild, the European Union does not rule out that an agreement may only be reached after an escalation of the trade confrontation. That is why retaliatory measures are scheduled for August 7 – this gives an additional week for possible continuation of negotiations after the US tariffs come into effect.
