Nearly 300 aftershocks recorded in Istanbul after powerful earthquake
As reported by TUT.AZ, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported 291 aftershocks following the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that occurred in Istanbul on April 23.
"Thanks to prompt risk reduction measures, the earthquake did not cause structural damage or human casualties. Most aftershocks were less than magnitude 3. Tremors of magnitude 4 and above were recorded eight times," the agency noted.
According to the data, analysis of aftershock frequency over the past 28 hours with 4-hour intervals shows a trend of steady decrease. The underground tremors are expected to subside within the coming weeks.
It is also indicated that the energy released as a result of the earthquake amounted to more than 30 kilotons in TNT equivalent. This is approximately 4 times greater than the indicators of the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that occurred in the same region on September 26, 2019.
