Green shield for eyes: scientists have proven the benefits of pistachios for preserving vision

A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition has revealed unexpected properties of this popular treat: just 50-60 grams of unsalted pistachios daily can significantly strengthen the protective mechanisms of the eye's retina.

During the experiment, specialists observed 36 volunteers aged 40 to 70 years with initially low lutein content in their diet. Participants were divided into two equal groups: the first consumed pistachios daily for 12 weeks, while the second continued to eat as usual. The results were impressive — the "nut group" showed significantly increased levels of macular pigment (MPOD), which works as natural "sunglasses," blocking the harmful effects of blue light.

Pistachios proved to be a true superfood for vision. Despite their moderate lutein content, they have an important advantage — they are rich in healthy fats, which significantly improve the absorption of this valuable pigment. This makes them an ideal and practical snack for maintaining eye health.

Besides vision, lutein positively affects other organs: it reduces inflammation, supports brain and heart function, and even improves skin condition.

The study authors recommend including a handful of pistachios in the daily diet as a simple way to prevent age-related eye diseases, including macular degeneration - one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly.
