Green tea: a powerful antioxidant with a "double face" - endocrinologist reveals unexpected nuances of the popular beverage
According to Doctor of Medical Sciences, endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova, the famous polyphenol EGCG in green tea, considered one of the strongest natural antioxidants, can be both a blessing and a hindrance for the body. This component reduces the activity of the aromatase enzyme, which converts testosterone to estradiol. Although hormones are conditionally divided into "male" and "female," the body needs both types. However, with age or due to negative habits, aromatase can work too intensively, which disrupts the hormonal balance in men and increases the likelihood of developing cardiovascular and oncological diseases.
Green tea acts as a natural regulator of aromatase activity and functions as an oncoprotector, slowing down tumor development and the formation of new blood vessels.
However, the expert warns: these same properties can be undesirable in certain situations. For example, when recovering from injuries or when trying to increase muscle mass, green tea can inhibit these processes.
Additionally, Pavlova draws attention to an important aspect of consumption: it is not recommended to drink tea during meals. Like coffee, it can extract beneficial substances from food. The specialist advises maintaining an interval of at least an hour between eating and consuming this beverage.
