Just 20 minutes of intense pedaling can restore memory in sleep-deprived people almost as effectively as a ninety-minute daytime nap — although the mechanisms behind these two methods differ dramatically. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The experiment involved 54 healthy young volunteers who were kept awake for 30 consecutive hours. One group was offered 20 minutes of pedaling at a moderate-to-vigorous pace, another was asked to simply rest, and a third was allowed to take a full daytime nap. Three days after the intervention, the researchers tested all participants' memory.
The results were impressive. Cycling exercise improved recognition of previously memorized material by 21% compared to the control group, while the daytime nap improved it by 23%. In other words, a short bout of physical activity performed nearly as well as a full rest period.
However, the pathways to this effect turned out to be fundamentally different. Electroencephalography showed that the participants who had slept exhibited reduced signs of brain "fatigue," whereas those who had exercised still showed high levels of these signals. This means that exercise strengthens memory not by restoring the brain, but through some entirely different mechanism.
As the authors note, the main advantage of physical activity is its accessibility: pedaling or taking a brisk walk is possible even in situations where napping is simply not an option — for example, during shifts for shift workers or doctors. "Exercise is accessible, inexpensive, and easy to implement," emphasized the study's first author, Madhura Lotlikar. Similar conclusions were reached a year earlier by British scientists: 20 minutes of moderate cycling significantly improved cognitive performance in people suffering from sleep deprivation.
At the same time, the researchers caution that both sleep and physical activity are merely temporary stopgaps and by no means a substitute for a full night's rest. Between 20 and 40% of adults worldwide experience sleep deficiency, and chronic sleep deprivation costs the world's largest economies approximately $680 billion annually due to lost productivity.
