Endocrinologist revealed the benefits and dangers of melon

Melon is rightfully considered one of the most beloved seasonal treats, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, experts warn that elevating it to the status of a "superfood" or a means of disease prevention is still not warranted.

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Russian media, endocrinologist Margarita Belousova listed an impressive array of beneficial substances found in melon: vitamins A, C, E, K, B-group vitamins, as well as potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and other trace elements. This composition makes melon a worthy component of a balanced diet, but one should not expect any pronounced therapeutic effect from it.

Good news for those who monitor their blood sugar levels: according to the specialist, melon is not contraindicated even for people with diabetes — the key is to control portion size and total carbohydrate intake. For those striving to lose excess weight, the fruit can also be useful — as a lower-calorie alternative to sweet desserts. However, melon by itself is not capable of accelerating the weight loss process.

As for gastrointestinal diseases, the doctor did not issue a strict prohibition on consuming melon. Everything depends on individual tolerance: in some people, large portions may trigger bloating or discomfort.

The optimal single serving for an adult, according to the expert's recommendation, ranges from 150 to 300 grams. Particular caution should be exercised by people with allergies to cucurbit crops or pollen from certain plants — there is a risk of cross-allergic reactions.

The doctor also drew attention to storage rules: after cutting, melon must be kept exclusively in the refrigerator, as bacteria multiply rapidly in the flesh at room temperature, posing a risk of food poisoning. As for the popular myths about melon being incompatible with milk, honey, or other products, according to the specialist, these have no scientific confirmation whatsoever.
