Hidden Threat of Frequent Swimming in Pools Revealed

Regular visits to a swimming pool can result in an unpleasant surprise — infection with molluscum contagiosum. This viral skin infection is transmitted through contact with an infected person or through shared items. Medical professionals from Xiangnan University highlighted this danger following the case of a young woman from Henan Province: in just 20 days of regular swimming, her body became covered with numerous skin lesions. This was reported by the publication Huanqiu Shibao.

According to local media reports, the young woman signed up for a swimming pool during the summer break in an effort to lose weight. However, after some time, more than 20 small growths appeared on her skin. After examination, doctors diagnosed her with molluscum contagiosum.

The disease is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus. Its hallmark sign is small, round, flesh-colored or whitish bumps with a central indentation resembling a navel.

"The infection can spread through direct skin contact with an infected person, through shared towels and other items, as well as through scratching the lesions, which transfers the virus to other areas of the body. The moist environment of swimming pools and communal bathing facilities creates conditions that make this mode of transmission more likely," the medical professionals explained.

Doctors warn that upon discovering a suspicious growth, one should under no circumstances attempt to squeeze or remove it on their own. Such actions can trigger the spread of the infection to other areas of the skin, cause bacterial inflammation, and lead to scarring.

As preventive measures, specialists recommend using only personal towels and swimming accessories, refraining from visiting the pool if there are any skin injuries, and making sure to shower and change into clean clothes after swimming. If characteristic lesions appear, it is essential to seek immediate consultation with a dermatologist.
