Tea and chocolate against hypertension: scientists discover natural remedy for lowering blood pressure

Tea and dark chocolate lovers can rejoice - British scientists from the University of Surrey have proven that regular consumption of these products, as well as apples and grapes, can effectively lower blood pressure. The results of this promising study were published in the prestigious scientific journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

The secret of the healing effect lies in flavan-3-ols - special natural compounds that are abundant in cocoa, tea leaves, and some fruits. A comprehensive analysis of 145 randomized studies convincingly showed that these substances can lower blood pressure, with the most pronounced effect observed in people who already have elevated readings. Surprisingly, in some cases, the effect of these natural compounds was comparable to the effect of taking medications.

The study also revealed that flavan-3-ols significantly improve the function of the endothelium - the inner layer of blood vessels that plays a key role in maintaining the health of the entire cardiovascular system. Importantly, this improvement occurred independently of changes in blood pressure, indicating a broader beneficial effect of these compounds on the body.

The study authors, however, caution: flavan-3-ols cannot completely replace drug therapy, but their moderate consumption as part of a balanced diet can be an effective additional way to maintain heart and vascular health.
