Tragedy on the film set: director killed by giraffe attack in South Africa

As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to the Irish Star, a tragic incident claimed the life of 47-year-old director Carlos Carvalho, who died after an unexpected attack by a giraffe named Gerald during filming.

On May 2, 2018, a film crew was conducting planned work on one of the game farms in South Africa. Carvalho was filming close-ups of animals when the irreparable happened. The giraffe unexpectedly approached the director and delivered a crushing blow with its head, throwing the man several meters away.

"We started filming close-ups of the giraffe's body and legs. Then, while Carlos was looking through the camera viewfinder, Gerald turned his neck and hit him on the head," said the shocked eyewitness of the incident, cameraman Dirk van der Merwe.

The injuries sustained were incompatible with life. Despite emergency helicopter transportation to a Johannesburg hospital, doctors were unable to save the director's life - Carvalho died that same night.

Richard Brooker, the owner of the house on the farm property, stated that the giraffe would not be euthanized. According to him, Gerald poses no danger, and the tragedy occurred due to the director's violation of safety rules when working with wild animals.
