Newly elected Pope Leo XIV announced preparations for a visit to the Turkish city of Iznik on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.
As reported by TUT.AZ with reference to Turkish media, the pontiff shared this significant information during a meeting with press representatives.
It is worth noting that the predecessor of Pope Leo XIV, Pope Francis, expressed his intention to visit Iznik last year in connection with the anniversary of the historic council, but was unable to realize this important trip.
During the conversation with journalists, the head of the Catholic Church confirmed that the Vatican is actively preparing his official visit to Turkey, timed to coincide with the 1700th anniversary of this significant event.
As a reminder, the First Council of Nicaea was convened in 325 at the initiative of Roman Emperor Constantine I and became a turning point in the history of Christianity, having an enormous influence on the formation of church canons.
