An unusual ceremony took place in the Mexican city of San Pedro Huamelula: Mayor Daniel Gutierrez entered into a symbolic marriage with a female caiman—a small crocodile. This was reported by Reuters.

According to the agency, Gutierrez was joined in matrimony with the reptile, which local residents affectionately call the "little princess." Before the solemn ceremony, the female caiman, dressed in a snow-white wedding dress, was carried with honors through the city streets. Residents greeted the unusual "bride" with dances and also brought the reptile into their homes.

According to local beliefs, the caiman is considered a sacred creature that personifies Mother Earth. The marriage of the "tribal leader" with this deity symbolizes the connection between the world of gods and the world of humans. This amazing ritual is already more than 230 years old, and local residents still firmly believe that such a union brings prosperity to the community, ensures a good harvest and a rich catch.
